Public REIT Index

FTSE NAREIT:
The most popular indices are FTSE Nareit US Real Estate Series, which includes: FTSE Nareit All REITs, FTSE Nareit Mortgage REITs, FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs, and FTSE Nareit Equity REIT. The first in the series includes all equity and mortgage REITs. If you’re using Yahoo Finance, you can type in ^FNAR for FTSE Nareit All REITs Index and ^FNER for FTSE Nareit All Equity REIT.
(Quick note: the difference between Nareit All Equity and Nareit Equity is that the latter does not include Infrastructure and Timber funds.)

S&P Dow Jones

Dow Jones Equity All REIT Index is the equivalent of Nareit’s All Equity REIT. In order to be included in this index, a REIT must have a minimum of $200 million in market capitalization. There are other indexes published by S&P such as the ones that track global and U.S. technology REITs.

MSCI US REIT Index

The MSCI US REIT Index is a free float-adjusted market capitalization weighted index that is comprised of equity REITs.
